Emperor names Heir to Throne!

Emperor Haile Selassie I today named the son of Crown Prince Asfa Wossen as direct heir to the throne after his father. The Emperor said this order of succession would be set out in a special law and promulagated in the official gazette.
In an Easter Day message at the Jubilee Palace to army officers, the Government, the Cabinet, and court dignitaries, the Emperor who is 81, first named 57 years old Crown Prince Asfa Wossen as his direct successor.

The Prince who is 20, is a student at Oxford. His father is in Switzerland and is partially paralyzed after a stroke in 1972.
The Emperor said there might be some people attempting to sow discord and disturbances by misinterpreting the provisions of the Constitution on succession to the throne. The provisions governing the succession must be explicitly set forth so that the people should clearly understand them.

The Emperor said that the unity of Ethiopia and the country's progress depended on peace and security. "Disturbances and public commotion are tantamount to opening our door to the enemy."
"Therefore each and every Ethiopian must direct his thought and effort along those lines which will help to achieve peace and security throughout the country."
Events of the last two months had slowed the nations economic activity. If that continued he said, the dire consequences on Ethiopians "should be clear to everyone."
