*** Happy Ethiopian Christmas ***
to all our Ethiopian and Rastafarian Brethren and Sistren!!

Christmas in Ethiopia
Melkam Gena!

Ethiopia (and especially the Ethiopian Orthodox Church) still uses the old Julian calendar, so they celebrate
Christmas on January 7th, not December 25th! The Christmas celebration in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is called
"Gena" Genna or Ganna. Most people go to Church on Christmas day.

Many people take part in a special Advent fast during the 43 days before Christmas. It starts on 25th November and
is known as the 'Fast of the Prophets' (Tsome Nebiyat). During this time, traditionally only one vegan meal is eaten
each day. It's a vegan meal because during the fast, foods including meat, dairy, eggs and wine aren't eaten.

For Gena, people get dressed in white. Most people wear a traditional garment called a Netela. It's a thin white
cotton piece of cloth with brightly colored stripes across the ends. It's worn like a shawl or toga. If you live in a big
town or city you might wear 'western' clothes. People go to church mass on Christmas Eve at 6.00pm and the service
finishes about 3.00am on Christmas Day.

The Ethiopian capital city is Addis Ababa. It's a modern city. Most people who live outside big cities live in round
house made of mud-plastered walls which have thatched cone-shaped roofs called "Gojo Bet". Sometimes houses in
the country are rectangular and made of stone.

The design of Ethiopian Church is similar to the houses. In the country, they are often very old and have been carved
out of rock. In cities, modern churches are built in three concentric circles, each within the others.

The choir sings from the outer circle. Everyone who goes to church for the Gena celebrations is given a candle. The
people walk around the church three times in a solemn procession, holding the candles. They then go to the second
circle to stand during the service. The men and boys are separated from the women and girls. The center circle is the
most important and holy place in the church and is where the priest serves the Holy Communion or Mass.

It's also a tradition that one of the Wise Men who visited Jesus came from Ethiopia.

Around the time of Gena, the men and boys play a game that is also called gena. It's played with a curved stick and a
round wooden ball, a bit like hockey.

Traditional Christmas foods in Ethiopia include 'wat' which is a thick and spicy stew that contains meat, vegetables
and sometimes eggs (sounds yummy!). Wat is eaten on a plate of 'enjera' - a flat bread. Pieces of the enjera are used
as an edible spoon to scoop up the wat.

Twelve days after Gena, on 19th January, Ethiopians start the three day celebration of Timkat. It celebrates the
baptism of Jesus. Children walk to church services in a procession. They wear the crowns and robes of the church
youth groups that they belong to. Adults wear the Netela. The priests wear red and white robes and carry
embroidered fringed umbrellas.

Musical instruments are played during the Timkat procession. The sistrum is a percussion instrument with tinkling
metal disks a bit like a vertical tambourine. A makamiya, a long T-shaped prayer stick is used to keep the rhythm and
is also used by the priests and a stick to lean on during the long Timkat church service!

Ethiopian men also play a sport called yeferas guks. It's played on horseback and the men throw ceremonial lances
at each other (sounds rather dangerous!).

People don't give and receive presents during Gena and Timkat. Sometimes children might be given a small gift of
some clothes from their family members. It's more a time for going to church, eating lots and playing games!

In Ethiopia, in the Amharic language, Father Christmas or Santa Claus is called 'Yágena Abãt' which means
'Christmas Father'. Merry Christmas in Amharic is 'Melkam Gena!' (መልካም ገና!). Merry Ethiopian Tewahedo
Orthodox Christmas to all of my Ethiopian & Rastafarian friends world wide!!!!

Message to Rastafarians,  Ethiopians, and all who

(added: October 2018)
"There is no Repatriation"
The time has come when we as Rastafarians, Haile Selassie I-ites should be asking  the question of our passionate
desire for repatriation and our survival as a people.

From 1930 to the present moment in time, our cry for repatriation has become domicile with respect. In 1974-75,
the abolition of the Monarchy of Emperor Haile Selassie I’s rule by a proclamation by the Stalinist government, has
destroyed the hope and aspiration of millions of people. Today Rastafarians are at a crossroads. The question of
where we are coming from, where we are today and where we are going. Ethiopia has had a long line of Kings and
monarchies stretching back over three thousand years.

There is no Ethiopia today because the Monarchy is absent. What will we tell our loved ones and families. Are we
going to tell them that we made a mistake and fail as how the Christ Jesus movement failed the people who are
looking to return to heaven and up to now has not  found heaven. Buddah, Ramah and other great seer movements
failed, yet their membership still have faith in their leaders. The Rastafarian movement is different because it is not
eccliastically organized with a leadership of spirituality.

For the first ime in history there is a Rastafarian doctrine or theology called Rastalogy with a spiritual leadership
from the Abuna, compatible to an Overseer (Ezekiel 2: 5 – “And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will
forbear, (for they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them”; yet be able to
give the respect spoken of by Emperor Haile Selassie I’s speech on leadership and what the leader expects from the
membership. The lack of acknowledgement of this leadership has caused a stagnation and a negative development
that today the abolition of the monarchy and no repatriation in our lifetime, leaves Rastafarians naked and socially
and economically displaced.

This is why we are calling this International Conference to discuss where we are coming from, where we are and
where we are going. The question of no repatriation in our lifetime with the abolition of the Solomonic dynasty
cannot be accepted.

The Ethiopia of today that we are seeing with the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), the All People Amhara
Organization (AAPO) and the Tigray People  Liberation Front (TPLF) etc create a problem of over two million
displaced people which cannot be solved without the presence of the Monarchy. If there is no Emperor Haile Selassie
I dynasty and only the Stalinist/Marxist government under the disguise of democracy being pushed by the present
Prime Minister, who wants to become King with the blessing of his mother, then there is no repatriation.

With the setting up of his kingdom with his own generals that he pardoned and returned from exile, including
Mengistu, the question of Rastafarians in Ethiopia who is not identified as a part of any ethnic groups in Ethiopia,
who will represent them? Only Emperor Haile Selassie I. The statement made by Emperor Haile Selassie I in the
Parliament of Jamaica in 1966 that Jamaicans and Ethiopians are ‘blood brothers’ is not supported by the present
government. So repatriation in the eyes of the present government is nonexistent.

Today, the Church of Haile Selassie I and the Imperial Ethiopian World Federation Inc., are the only legal entities in
the world that represent Rastafarians whether they accept it or not.
Please come to the conference with any opposition to the above statements or questions dealing with repatriation
in our lifetime and seeing where we are going in the future with our loved ones and families.

International President
Imperial Ethiopian World Federation, Inc. (I.E.W.F.)
I.E.W.F. Policy Programme
The present political upheaval in Ethiopia and the overthrowal of Emperor Haile Selassie I and the abolition of
Constitutional Monarchy, have resulted in policies in Ethiopia that abbreviate repatriation in Rasta lifetime.

In the face of this Rastafarians have to acknowledge that their Jamaican nationality, their Ethiopian sovereignty and
the ability to survive economically, cannot exist without the presence of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile
Selassie I and an effective Crown Council. There is no representation for Rastafarians dealing with repatriation,
either in the west or in Ethiopia.

This makes the Imperial Ethiopian World Federation Inc., (I.E.W.F. Inc.,) have to utilize the broadcast of King Ahma
Selassie I as the preamble of the I.E.W.F. Inc., Political Programme Policy for the directive of our future personal and
Rastafarian objectives. For our future Rastafarian objectives we should interpret the speeches of His Imperial
Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I as the criteria to call all

Rastafarians together to consolidate something meaningful such that the world will see a meaningful effort from the
Rastafarians worldwide after over a decade of spiritual and passionate dream of the Rastafarian during his lifetime.

Rastafarian beliefs were born out of politics from 1916 to today we have to unite and that can only come about
through the 1993 Broadcast of King Ahma Selassie I to Rastafarians those that love justice and hate aggression. We
have to create an effective organized policy Programme through farming to consolidate our economic viability,
spiritual change through ‘tradition and customs must be modified to ensure the continuity of Rastaism.

The Rastafarianism is older than the two political parties in Jamaica. We have to go back to the blackboard and
accept that repatriation became our passionate desire and made us forget ourselves as the economic man and the
question of our political responsibility and not only our spiritual life today after the advent of 1974-75. We are
frustrated because we still are preaching repatriation and there is none as there is no political mechanism set up
outside of the I.E.W.F. Inc., with opposition from other Rasta organizations who are living in the past.

How can we survive in the twenty-first century with just sentiments? We will have to call a conference and accept
the leadership of the Imperial Ethiopian World Federation Inc., and the Political Programme.  The I.E.W.F. Inc.,
contested three (3) general elections in Jamaica, we have an elementary school, a medical center and Temple
Worship Oneness. We also have a Farming Project ongoing with over ten (10) acres of land to plant reap and become
economically viable.

We believe that if we have a conference it will result in finding people who want to contribute something
meaningful.  Jamaica is a democracy in Jamaica then we must put it on trial. We have to participate in politics to
ensure our political, economic and spiritual survival.

We must create our own perestroika to the current economic system. We have to go back to the drawing board and
question where we are coming from, where we are today and where we are going in the future. We must believe that
repatriation is abbreviated and think more along the lines of creating economic viability, low cost houses, schools,
clinic and Temple worship and try to bring back law and order with training centers for the youth.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I speech on leadership must be the criteria to approach our political
quest for Rasta representation in Parliament and our Policy Programme for the development of Rasta in the future
through involvement in the politics of Jamaica as Rastafarians.

Man is a political animal. Politics is the food that you eat, the clothes you wear and where you live. We cannot focus
on the past, the former things of old identified in Isaiah 43: 18-19. We have to move politically in Jamaica as Jamaica
Nationals and Ethiopian Sovereigns and try to change the politics of Ethiopia and Jamaica from neocolonialism,
nepotism and corruption.

This writing is introducing a Policy Programme that is open to debate and discussion in the interest of getting a
broad consensus on our future as a people. We need people who are in search and believe they have a contribution
to the question of a Policy Programme for Rasta Political future.

...the Jamaican Democratic Socialism and opposition in Jamaica is not prepared to give the Rastafarian movement representation
in the Parliament as a minority within the political Democracy of Jamaica.

...15% of the Jamaican populous is Rastafarian and the Rastafarian community is older than the two Political Parties; yet there is
no voice of an independent Senator for the Rastafarian.

The Rastafarian communities need help in the areas of basic schools; clinics and social welfare
assistance in the rural areas.  Without a "Voice" of Representation in the Jamaican Parliament for the Rastafarian, Our
communities will not benefit from the Government in the near future.  It is important
that Our Rastafarian communities in Jamaica and worldwide agitate for a Rastafarian representative in
the Political systems of Jamaica to address these concerns and donate financing when possible.
